In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? unfinished

There were many conventions I conformed to and challenged to appeal my target audience and to look into sub-genres through challenging genres. I did extensive research on how the guitar player is shot in Blues-Rock videos as the guitar is so essential in blues. For this convention I watched videos such Black Keys "Just Got To Be" in this video there many close ups of the chords to demonstrate the guitarist's skill. From this video I learnt I had to utilize alot of the camera time on the guitar as it would please my target audience.
From my research on guitar solo's I picked up a sense of immense emotion coming through the guitarist and a mix of unorthodox camera shots to reflect the power and pace of the guitar solo. This is visible in my music video where I incorporate over 10 cuts in the space of 7-8 cuts to give a feel of edginess and to reflect the mood of the riff.
Another convention I conformed to was the lead guitarist/singer recieving most of the camera time - I picked up this convention through watching many blues-rock videos such as Just Got to be by the black keys where the lead singer gets most of the camera time as the audience are keen on seeing the lead.

As my track included both blues and rock I decided to incorporate alot of attitude into my video which is seen through the drummer who plays with his hood up which is linked to the Arctic Monkeys video "A view from the afternoon".
My video:

Arctic Monkeys:

Mise en Sene was key for me as this represented so much of the conventions blues-rock/rock 'n' roll. As for my clothing my main actor was shown wearing a black leather jacket which is commonly linked with rock 'n' roll and radiates alot of attitude which could be linked The Ramones who regularly dressed in leather jacket and were regarded as a band with alot of attitude.
Ramones:

MY MUSIC VIDEO:

My main actor had quite unorthodox mohawk with the centre dyed blonde which portrayed quite a Rock 'n' Roll feel as it is quite an independent look. The facial expressions my actor displayed were also quite distressed and alot of anger as the genre blues incorporate alot distress in their lyrics.
In my music video my actor was shown to be in the darker side of the rock 'n' roll lifestyle as usually the more glamorous side of rock 'n' roll is portrayed in rock videos for example in "Sweet child of mine" by Guns n Roses where everyone is shown to be having alot of fun, surrounded by many friends and girls. Whereas in my video I challenged the convention of the rock 'n' roll lifestyle being not so glamorous as it showed the darker side of drug taking as he's shown to be quite distressed as of his addiction.

My music video also challenges the convention of the idea of a resulotion in the regularly seen in music video's whereas my video portrays the downfall that occurs through the drug-taking lifestle.

What have you learnt from your audience feedback

The first feedback i got from my audience was when i was deciding on what track to pick for my music video. i played three options to my audience and let them give em feedback on which video would give me enough freedom to go and produce a raw/gritty music video, from the help from my audience i picked radio moscow's broke down and this went on to be the right decision as it did give me all the freedom to be as creative as i wanted to be and helped me pursue the raw/gritty feel i was going for.
Second time i got feedback from my audience was when I played them the track a few times they said that the track would be too long for a music video and they said i should cut it down if i wanted to keep the fast paced cuts and keep the audience interested. After that discussion i cut the orginal track to under 3 mins and the feedback was extremely useful as i was able to incorporate all the shots i had in mind and keep it fast paced and incorporate that edginess.
For my music video i had shot two shop scenes and the first scene was unsuccesful as my audience believed it didnt give off a rough enough feel and they stated the rain was getting in the way therefore i decided to scrap my first shoot and shot the shop scene another day in a different news agents. This shot was succcesful as the weather was good for the shot and the owner was very co-operative and helped in the process of shooting.

Digipak Feedback

For my magazine advert I chose between many fonts and got a lot of feedback all circling around the color of the font see whether the font may stick out. In the end from my audience feedback I decided on changing the font black do bright red in order to stand out more to bypassers.
1st Draft - Magazine Advert ( i can't upload this now miss as it's on the school macs)

Final Magazine advert

From my audience feedback I used the contrast of red and black to stand out to bypassers and also to conotate themes of the music e.g. danger, revenge, love lost e.t.c

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts ? unfinsished

From the very start I was aware that audiences purchase a certain artist's record if the music video and the Digipak appeals to them so I knew I had to put alot of emphasis on my Digipak.
For me the Digipak was vital as it helps create a more personal feel for the audiencce with the artist as it may contain notes and more pictures of the artist. I learnt this from the record "Truth" by Jeff Beck as the inside contained nine pages of notes addressing the production of the album and addressed directly to the audience which gives audience a sense of belonging.

As for my digipak I decided not to include album notes as I learnt with Blues-rock artists there tends to be more of a mystery to their persona and mostly all about music where as the audiences of artists like Jeff Beck who are heavyweights of the Rock genre tend to address their audience as of them being rockstars.
To further support not conforming to the conventions I searched for interviews for the band and didnt find many and this gave me the sense the band are more about the music and don't like to be interviewed.
ALBUM COVER :

For my front cover I decided to use the frontman on the cover. This was because the guitarist and songwriter in a Blues-rock band plays the biggest as so much revolves around their creative spectre such as John Mayall and the bluesbreakers - here the main songwriter John Mayall is named ahead of the band as his lyrics are the key to the band. Another example of this would be where Iggy Pop is named ahead of the Stooges on the record "Raw Power".

I decided to give my album more of a darker feel with the color black and scratches and the feeling of being barred as blues is directly linked with themes of love-lost, revenge e.t.c generally more negative topics and I believe my album cover portayed this feel as it looks as though he is stuck and cannot get out which links to my script of him being caught in the world of drug addictions.

BACK COVER

As for my back cover I decided address the musical aspect of the band - the guitar which is the most essential instrument to the band and focusing on that aspect makes a clear statement that the band are all about the music. Once again I decided to stay with lead guitarist/frontman as he is the key element of the band and the audience are more interested in singer/songwriter than bassist or the drummer.

INSIDE

For my inside I used a photo of the amp and the guitar once again focusing on the musical aspect and I decided to go against the conventions as usually the band would be seen with the instruments but here the message is clear - that it isnt about the image of the band but just the music. I also incorporated actual reviews of the band to re-assure the audience that what they are buying will be worth it. As audiences are looking for value I decided to use the quoote "THIS IS THE REAL DEAL" In bold and in the centre as it'll stand out to the audience who have bought it to know that they havnt wasted money.

How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages? cont.

In search of my song I used www.reverbnation.com to find my first band 'Blues Mafia' but later on from class feedback I chose not to stick with the band.

Another common media technology used was you tube as I used it to find my track and also I used it frequently for my research stages to find blues-rock videos.Youtube was vital to my production process as i was able to see how other blues-rock videos were commonly shot and this helped me to incorporate some camera shots and challenge the conventions as-well.

IMovie HD
This probably the most vital in my production as I used it to edit and put together my music video. Imovie was key to my final product as I used the effects it had to offer such as flash to add to the rough feel of music video and to emphasize the impact of the guitar solos. I also used the effect 'earthquake' to make the video seem more edgy as of the frequent drug-use and to emphasize the characters path in life. IMovie HD was extremely useful to me I as I was able to sort all my clips and rename and make many copies of my clips and cut them precisely into what length I wanted them all to be - this was even more important as my music video incorporated 250+ cuts.
